Wesley Jones ’83

Basketball

Wesley was a two-year member of the varsity basketball team here at McClancy and served as co-captain of the team with Joe Franco (a McClancy Hall of Famer) his senior year, the 1982-83 season.  That team advanced to the C.H.S.A.A. City-wide Playoffs Final 4 and had upset St. Nicholas of Tolentine H.S. 70-67 in the Quarterfinals at Manhattan College.  Wesley at 6’4” was the best defensive player on the team and led the Cinderella team to a second place finish in the Queens Division and to a final record of 18-10.  The team made it to the Final Four.

Wesley was named to the 2nd team C.H.S.A.A. All-Brooklyn-Queens team as well as the New York Newsday, the New York Post, the New York Daily News and The Tablet.  The New York Daily News and the New York Post named him Honorable Mention All-City.  At graduation Wesley received the Crusader Award and was a member of the Principal’s List.

He was very well respected by both the faculty and the student body his four years at Msgr. McClancy.  Wesley was a true student athlete.  After graduating from Msgr. McClancy he attended Penn State University and was a three-year member of the Men’s Basketball Team A Division I school in the Atlantic 10 Conference.  Wesley was co-captain of the team his senior year and was one of the leaders in the Atlantic 10 Conference in defensive steals.

The Penn State Nittany Lion Magazine featured Wesley Jones’s career in its publication his senior year.  Wesley graduated with honors from Penn State in 1988 graduating Cum Laude.

Wesley, in Coach Kent’s mind, was the best leader of all of the McClancy teams he has ever coached.  Wesley was a leader both on and off the court.  He was a credit to his family and to Msgr. McClancy Memorial High School.
