Tim Kelly ’64

Tim Kelly grew up in Astoria and ran for the Msgr McClancy track team, under Coach Harry Howell, from 1960-64. He specialized in the short-distance events. Tim had a lightning start and was responsible for getting the relay teams out in front from the get go. As a member of the 440 yard, 880 yard, and sprint medley relay teams, his and the teams’ school records stayed on the school record books for many years. He set the school records in the 100 meters (10.9 seconds) which lasted for 22 years and in the 400 meter relay (44.1 seconds) which lasted for 30 years. His 800 meters relay time of 1 minute 33.5 seconds is the 7th fastest in school history. His teammates cite his commitment to the sport and to his team in calling him the consummate athlete and team member.

Upon graduating from St. John’s University in 1968, Tim enrolled in the Naval Flight Training Program. He received his Naval Aviator wings in 1969 and served as a Lt.JG in Guantanamo Bay Cuba and San Diego, CA. A highlight of his naval career was serving as part of the Apollo 15 space flight recovery team. Tim started working on Wall St. after leaving the Navy and enjoyed a 26 year career at Morgan Stanley, including stints in London and New York. He retired as Managing Director of International Sales-Trading.

Tim has been married to the former Martha Varsha for 31 years. They are the proud parents of three boys: Timothy, Peter, and Steven. They divide their time between Bridgehampton, NY and Vero Beach, Fl where Tim enjoys playing golf, fishing and skiing. He is a member of John’s Island Club in Vero Beach and a Director of Laurel Links Country Club on Long Island.
