Ricardo Urbina ’63

Track

Ricardo M. Urbina graduated in 1963 after an illustrious career on the track team. He set numerous records, two of which still stand today, some forty years later. Ricardo holds the Indoor record for the 800 meter run (1:57.7) and the 1,000 meter Indoor record (2:15.1). Ricardo was the National Champion and meet record holder for the 1,000 yards (1963); the National Record Holder for 880 yards on an 11 lap track (1963) and was named to the High School All-American Track Team in both 1962 and 1963.

Ricardo went on to continue his education at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.. His track accomplishments at Georgetown are as follows: twice IC4A Champion 880 yards (Outdoors 1966 and 1967); IC4A Champion 1,000 yards National Collegiate Record (1966); NCAA Champion 880 yards indoors (1966); USTFF Champion Indoors (1966 and 1967); All-American Time Top Ten Performers 800meters and 1,000 yards; and lastly is a member of the Georgetown University Athletic Hall of Fame. Ricardo is also in the CHSAA Hall of Fame for his accomplishments at McClancy.

Presently, Ricardo Urbina is a Judge and sits on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. He graduated from Georgetown Law School and served 13 years on the Superior Court, holding the distinction of being the first Latino ever appointed to the Federal Bench in Washington, D.C.. In 1986, Washington magazine selected him as one of the Washingtonians of the Year.
