James Carey

Jim is currently finishing his 45th year at Monsignor McClancy Memorial High School.

Jim spent his first 18 years as a teacher, coach and department chairperson. The school’s Track & Field program became a dynasty under Coach Carey’s leadership. The school won 10 CHSAA Brooklyn-Queens Championships and 5 CHSAA City Championships which is now known as the Catholic State Championships. In the last two years of Coach Carey’s career, the school won the newly reinstated Mayor’s Trophy Championship which crowned the school the best Track & Field team in the five boroughs two years in a row that included all Catholic, private & public schools.

The next 17 years Jim served as the principal of the school. In 1997, he became the first lay principal in the school’s history. His service as principal is currently the longest tenure of any principal in the school. Jim along with Brother Robert Connolly S.C. were instrumental in securing a $10.1 million grant from the Port Authority. Jim had a role in many major school projects as he worked collaboratively with the other administrators to help the school thrive well into the future. Projects such as the Capital Campaign of 2012 and the soundproofing/air conditioning of the building were timely and needed. These projects allowed each classroom to be renovated along with other areas of the building. In addition, the ultimate transition from an all-boys setting to a co-educational environment was finally realized.

Jim now works as a counselor in the guidance department. He also is the coordinator for the (SSP) Student Sponsor Partnership program for all four grade levels. Jim served as a member of the Steering Committee for the school’s Strategic Plan which helped establish the direction for the future of the school.

Jim recently spent 9 years as a consultant for the diocesan office as a mentor to various Catholic academy school boards. He also served 5 years as the Notre Dame Catholic Academy Board Chairperson while being a member of the Superintendent’s Advisory Committee.

Jim earned his Bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of South Carolina, his Master’s degree from Adelphi University in Physiology and another Master’s degree in School

Administration from St. John’s University. He also completed the Brothers of the Sacred Heart 3-year Coindre Leadership Program which led him to conferences in France, Italy and England.
