Brother Brian Curry, S.C. (Thomas Joseph Curry) was born in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, where he attended St. Joseph’s Elementary School under the guidance of the Sisters of St. Joseph. At the time, Msgr. Joseph V. McClancy was the Chancellor of Education in the Brooklyn Diocese. His signature appears on the graduation diploma. You have to wonder: “Was this a sign of things to come?”
Brother Brian continued on to high school at St. Joseph’s High School, a formation program for the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. Upon graduation, he entered the Sacred Heart Novitiate in Metuchen, N.J. where he spent a year of religious studies. In 1959, after first profession as a Brother of the Sacred Heart, he continued his college education at Spring Hill College, a small Jesuit college outside of Mobile, Alabama, where he received a Bachelor of Education degree with a major in English. Education-wise, he continued for three years in theological studies at Fordham University. In the summer of 1965, he continued to study English at St. John’s University. In 1971, he received a Master’s degree in English from Villanova University, and his New York State permanent certification as a teacher of English. He continued over the next few years pursuing various degrees and certificates in technology, trades, music and art.
In September of 1962, Brother Brian received his first assignment to Msgr. McClancy as an English teacher and assistant yearbook moderator. Brother Brian has spent sixty-three years of ministry in the educational field. Fifty-five of those years have been at Msgr. McClancy High School. He has been present at sixty Msgr. McClancy graduation ceremonies, either as a faculty member or as a provincial.
In 1985, Brother Brian was elected to be Provincial of the New York–New Jersey–Kenya province. In 1982 and 1988, he represented New York and New Jersey at the General Chapters in Rome. In his many years at Msgr. McClancy, he served in various roles as board member and chairperson, as teacher, department chairman of both the English and the Guidance Departments, as cross-country, track and field coach, as school webmaster, as Director of the College office, as counselor, as teacher of college credit classes and as director of the college advantage programs with Adelphi and St. John’s Universities, as NCAA accreditation program and as SSD coordinator. At various time, he was the director of the school plant, the moderator of intramurals and the assistant moderator of the McClancian yearbook. Within the Brothers, he has served as Director, sub-director, Provincial and Provincial Councilor over many years.
